Poetry is an art.
Art is the mastery of a skill (the means) in doing a work with a purpose (the end).
You judge the value of the piece of poetry (or painting) by judging the value of its ‘means’ and of its ‘end’.
The Chinese classical poetries emphazises more on the means --- the traditional poetic skills, formats, structures, rules, meters, rhymes etc.
The Chinese new poetries emphazises more on the ends --- it frees itself by discarding all the traditional restrictions, in order to achieve its ‘end’ of expressions of the thoughts.
The misty poets tried to express their thoughts by ‘obscure’ or ‘not so direct’ means.
The classical poetries are like the traditional realistic paintings.
The new poetries are like the impressionism and expressionism styles in painting.
The misty poetry is like the abstract paintings whereby not everybody can appreciate the real underlying meanings.
